Fossil Free Stanford was founded in 2012 by five Stanford undergraduates who heard Bill McKibben on his Do The Math tour. The revelation that fossil fuel corporations cannot burn all of their existing reserves without our planet reaching devastating levels of warming marked the beginning of the global fossil fuel divestment movement.
Several years later, our core team is more than 15 members strong. We are thousands of students, faculty, alumni, and Stanford affiliates seeking to build a more just and sustainable world. We are Fossil Free Stanford.
In May 2014, Stanford made a historic commitment to divest its $28 billion endowment from the coal industry. But today, Stanford is still invested in oil and gas companies that contribute massively to climate change. We can and must do better. #DivesttheRest
